Greetings! Saudações! Salve!

...or any other expression that welcomes you to this page.

Summer 2010 - and a small change in the website. I am the undergraduate advisor for the History Department this summer. If you need to talk to me, check my office hours and schedule an appointment.

And, as you recall, the California University system adopted furloughs for last year - and I am NOT going to use this page to tell you how bad it was. And it is. The crisis is not over by any means, and we still are unsure about what will happen next year. Do join the campaign http://savethecsu.com and you'll know more about it.

However, I have great news for 2010/2011. After some years trying, I have received a NEH fellowship for my project on the Guanabara Bay! I am very, very happy, but I have no more excuses: now I MUST finish the book.

I will be at SOLCHA in La Paz, Mexico this week (June 14), in what promises to be a great conference. I will be back on June 22.

Our book series Latin American Landscapes, with the University of Arizona Press, should edit its first book very soon, and my co-editor Chris Boyer has been absolutely great. It is so good to work with brilliant people.

But while I am here, how can I help you, my dear visitor? Everything depends on YOU. What do you need from this site? In fact, why are you here???

If you are a student, go to Teaching and you can find my syllabi and office hours. If you are a colleague, maybe you want to know my research interests - there is a page for you too.

If you are a friend, just send me an email. I would love to hear from you.

June 2010

"With the historian it is an article of faith that knowledge of the past is a key to understanding the present."
