Academy

Academic institutions: the story of my life in the last 20 years (with some crazy gaps.)

I attended high school at the Colégio Santo Inácio--Jesuits, of course. I graduated  in 1984 - it sounds so long ago! - and I am still in touch with the Association of Ex-Alunos of CSI.

In 1991 I received my Bachelor Degree from the Pontifícia Universidade Católica - PUC, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I am  specially in debt with a remarkable scholar and teacher, Margarida de Souza Neves (Guida). She was my advisor for my thesis on History and Literature -  the use of the concept of time in the chronicles of Machado de Assis. (Sorry, it is not on-line).

In 1994 I attended a graduate course in the ISER - Religion Studies Institute  entitled Theory and Praxis of Environment, organized by Samyra Crespo. Samyra has simply worked with every single environmental activist leader in Rio de Janeiro.

In 1996 I began work on my Master of Science on Environmental  Policy Studies at New Jersey Institute of Technology. I graduated in May 1998. My Master's advisor, Dr. John Opie, was co-founder of the American Society of Environmental History - ASEH.  A wonderful scholar  and also a good friend.

After a long coast-to-coast trip, in 1998 I began my Ph.D. in History at the Stanford University, in California. My major field is Latin America.  I  am writing an environmental history of the Guanabara Bay, at Rio de Janeiro. My current advisor is prof. Zephyr Frank, a tireless friend and counselor for graduate students. He had to take over the Latin American field at the History Departmentadvisor here is Dr. John Wirth, a brazilianist, an environmental historian and an activist. A perfect combination.

In 2002-2003, I was the Lieberman Fellow at the Stanford Humanities Center. I am also active at the Judicial Panel Pool and at the Brazilian Student Association.  While I am in the writing stage of my dissertation, I also edit the Online Bibliography on Latin American Environmental History
